And firespike s upright growth habit makes it a good fit in small or large yards. Firespike is a tropical native and likes to live in that environment. The look of the plant is a casual cottage garden style.

It can tolerate some sandy soil but it won t live through extended periods of cold. It can work well tucked into a more formal landscape as a backdrop plant for smaller manicured shrubs. I have 3 nice big plants.

The bloom time depends upon in what zone they are grown. Odontonema strictum is the botanical we call it firespike but it is also called mexican firespike. Firespike is one of my favorite plants in my garden even when it s not in bloom.
